- Actually it looks a lot like HDLC interframe fill forced into a UART.

- There are the occasional obscure circumstances when modem A thinks it
- has connected without error control and modem B thinks it has
- established a LAPM link. Yes, this should never happen, but there seem
- to be some modems with really broken V.42 implementations.

- Forcing the modem to reliable (not auto-reliable!) mode might help. So
- might disabling the V.42 detection phase. So might disabling LAPM
- altogether.
